Why Some Animals Live in Groups
Many animals live in groups, but they do not all do so for the same reason. For some animals, living together provides protection. When a group of meerkats searches for food, one animal often watches for danger. If it sees a predator, it gives a warning call so the others can hide.
Group living can also make it easier to find food. Wolves, for example, hunt together when they need to catch animals that are larger or faster than a single wolf. By cooperating, the members of the pack have a better chance of success.
However, living in a group may also create problems. Animals must share food and space, and illness can spread more quickly among them. Therefore, group living is most helpful when its advantages are greater than its costs.
- To explain how animals protect one another
- To show that small animals cannot find food
- To compare meerkats with wolves
- To describe animals that live alone
